The Complete eSIM Guide

How eSIM Works
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a SIM card permanently integrated into a device's hardware. The physical chip — technically called an eUICC (embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card) — is soldered to the device's motherboard during manufacturing.
What makes eSIM different from a traditional SIM is that its carrier profile (the data that identifies you to a network) is stored digitally and can be changed remotely. The GSMA's SGP.22 specification defines how these profiles are downloaded, stored, and managed.
When you purchase an eSIM plan, the provider gives you a QR code that points to their SM-DP+ (Subscription Manager Data Preparation) server. Your device connects to this server over Wi-Fi, authenticates, and downloads an encrypted carrier profile. This profile is then installed in the eUICC chip and can be activated or deactivated as needed.
Activation on iPhone
Apple has supported eSIM since the iPhone XS (2018). The activation process is standardized across all supported models.
Prerequisites
- iPhone XS or later (see device guide for full list)
- Device must be carrier-unlocked
- iOS 12.1 or later
- Wi-Fi connection for profile download
Step-by-Step
- Open Settings → Cellular
- Tap Add Cellular Plan (or "Add eSIM" on newer iOS)
- Point your camera at the QR code from your provider
- Tap Continue when prompted to add the plan
- Wait 1–3 minutes for the profile to download
- Label the plan (e.g., "Europe Travel") and configure Dual SIM settings
- Activate the plan when you arrive at your destination
Activation on Android
Android eSIM activation varies slightly by manufacturer, but the general process is consistent across Samsung, Google Pixel, and other Android devices.
Samsung Galaxy
- Settings → Connections → SIM card manager
- Tap Add mobile plan
- Scan QR code or enter activation code manually
- Follow on-screen prompts to complete installation
- Configure which SIM handles calls, texts, and data
Google Pixel
- Settings → Network & internet → SIMs
- Tap Add SIM
- Scan QR code
- Confirm installation
- Set data SIM preference
Choosing a European eSIM Plan
The eSIM market has grown significantly. Key factors to evaluate when choosing a plan for European travel:
| Factor | What to Look For | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage countries | Verify your destinations are included | Not all "European" plans cover all countries |
| Data volume | Match to your actual usage pattern | Running out mid-trip is costly and inconvenient |
| Validity period | When does the clock start? | Purchase-start vs. activation-start varies |
| Hotspot support | Check fair use policy | Some plans restrict tethering |
| Network tier | Tier 1 roaming partners | Affects speed in each country |
| Top-up option | Can you add data if needed? | Flexibility for longer trips |
Data Usage Reference
| Activity | Approximate Usage |
|---|---|
| WhatsApp / iMessage (text) | ~1 MB/hour |
| Email with attachments | ~5–20 MB per session |
| Google Maps navigation | ~5–10 MB/hour |
| Web browsing | ~50–100 MB/hour |
| Music streaming (standard) | ~60 MB/hour |
| Video call (HD) | ~1.5–3 GB/hour |
| Video streaming (1080p) | ~3–7 GB/hour |
Dual SIM Configuration
Most eSIM-capable devices support Dual SIM — using a physical SIM and an eSIM simultaneously. This is the recommended setup for international travelers who want to keep their home number active.
Physical SIM (home carrier) → Calls and SMS only (keeps your number reachable)
eSIM (travel plan) → Data only (cost-effective local data)
Configure this in Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data (select travel eSIM) and Default Voice Line (select home SIM). This ensures calls use your home number while data routes through the cheaper travel plan.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No signal after border crossing | Network not auto-selected | Toggle Airplane Mode; manually select network |
| Slow speeds | Data throttled or congestion | Check data balance; try different network |
| Profile not visible | Deactivated after update | Settings → Cellular → re-enable profile |
| QR code won't scan | Screen glare or distance | Print QR code; use manual entry code |
| Activation error | Device locked or incompatible | Verify unlock status; check device compatibility |
